The title compound, C(22)H(19)NO(2), has potential for use as a new nonlinear optical material. Mol-ecules are almost planar. One C atom of the heterocyclic ring system is disordered over two positions; the site occupancy factors are 0.6 and 0.4.

The title compound, C(11)H(8)O(3), was isolated from Impatiens balsamina plants (balsam, LIB) grown in our laboratory. The two six-membered rings of the naphthalene-1,4-dione unit are coplanar [maximum deviation = 0.009 (1) Å]. The O and C atoms of the meth-oxy substituent also lie close to the naphthalene plane, with deviations of 0.0090 (2) and 0.047 (2) Å, respectively.

In the crystal structure, inter-molecular C-H⋯O inter-actions link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network. π-π contacts between the isoindoline rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.592 (1) and 3.727 (1) Å] may further stabilize the structure.
